Crosby Beach

There is something amazingly eery about those figures, standing on the beach staring out to sea. It is impossible not to believe that they see something there or know something that you don’t know.

The spirits of these figures must be incredibly wise. Or incredibly stupid – for they either possess some intelligence that we don’t, or they have totally fallen for something they were told. Like characters from Dr Who.

I have been meaning to come and see Another Place for years, but I’m glad it took me so long to come and find them. Time has covered them with barnacles and rusted their limbs, and even today they stand steadfast against the elements whilst we bow our heads into the wind and pull our hoods up in the rain on the grey day.

Do they talk to each other? They must be aware of each other, but they are too far apart for words to be spoken between them, so they must feel rather lonely. If you follow their gaze there is a wind farm out at sea. I wonder whether that has been there as long as them, or whether when it was built it blocked their view.

We bought ice creams and sat in our coats eating them before leaving the 100 iron men with the tide coming in around their ankles.
