Big Cheese

It’s not unusual to feel unsatisfied with your job. When you have learnt everything you can you should move on, when things are unfulfilling you must make a change, to compromise shows weak resolve. So though days of medical filing were slow, Mr E had occasionally been allowed to join the doctors in the surgery and he knew that working in health was good for him. But his job in retail (expensive though the products were) was wearing him out… there were days when he folded and refolded piles of shirts just to look busy, or searching through shoeboxes for sizes that no one had asked for.

He had kept an eye out for alternative employment and whilst strolling one lunchtime he caught a whiff of a smart cheese shop, and passing its window, he saw an advertisement for seasonal staff. I can satisfy customers with the greatest of ease, and I love food especially cheese… In fact Mr E knew a few facts about cheese and a couple of jokes (although they were a little.. well… sleazy?) so he went to his interview confident he could sell himself as an apprentice cheesemonger. But on his way he had a sudden panic: he had been asked to come in for a coffee and a chat and suddenly he worried that his inability to sip hot drinks might make him look unprofessional or young, and he wanted to come across like mature cheddar not babybel. A juice? Yes a juice would do, and it won’t scald my mouth like a freshly made brew.

Towards the end of the interview he was taken to the counter to have a look at the cheeses, and as he stood up he counted on his fingers the types of cheese he knew: soft, hard, holey and blue, but sprawling out under his nose he saw what might have been over a hundred ripe cheeses to pick from, and he gasped at the choice.

After he tasted a few he was told to come in for a trial shift, an initiation in which he thought he could prove his love of cheese by doing something impressive, something like consuming an entire wheel of brie! But perhaps that would end his cheese shop vision with some nutty dreams.

Mr E is awaiting a call back…
